About the decorating: A Woodland Wonderland

Made welcome by the Victorian mansion’s entry with is seasonal garland greens, wreaths and lights, you’ll step inside Highfield, and as though stepping through the wardrobe into Narnia, be transported into a magical woodland realm replete with forest scents and tree branches growing out of the Hall’s antique chandeliers. In the center of the room, you will see hand crafted trunks of majestic trees holding court, dripping with Spanish moss and twinkling lights, their crevices staged with vignettes of forest scenes. The rooms, hallways, and stairway landings of this magnificent building have been made over into a fantastical world, where fur and wood and wool are spun together and light sparkles off bits of crystal glass.

This is the holidays at Highfield Hall and Gardens as never before. Driven by the creative inspiration of local designer Sandra Covallo and her friend, the author and stylist Matthew Mead, some 50 helpers will do over Highfield Hall’s rooms, using donated collections, salvaged materials from Highfield’s basement, found objects and material some might otherwise have left for the dustbin.

In this year’s Winter Wonderland, Highfield’s dining room becomes a vision in white – entered through a façade of vintage bird houses, the room is filled with snow-covered trees, furs, and light reflected off silver trays, translucent cloches, and sparkling crystals. The grand stairway landing becomes a lantern-lit winter woodland picnic area with vintage woolens, snowshoes and a backpack.  On the second floor, a cozy woodland gathering area draws visitors in to relax in wicker chairs by a fantastical fire pit, while the kids enjoy in the nearby train room. The décor in each room will be drawn together with common themes of vintage wools, natural wreaths and boughs of eucalyptus seedpods, and natural wood – all “upcycled” by Covallo and her design team.

Highfield’s Board of Directors have joined the effort and have turned the Hall’s billiard room into a hunting lodge where they will provide tea and cookies for visitors.

The overall effect of all the work by the design team have transformed the Victorian mansion into a magical place in time. We invite you to come and experience the magic of Highfield!
