Pianist Jacqueline Schwab, heard on Ken Burns’ recent PBS series The American Revolution, his Grammy-award winning Civil War, Baseball, Mark Twain, and many others, is delighted to perform a special version of her newest program Be the Light!

Her Highfield performance spotlights Falmouth native Katharine Lee Bates, who in 1893 wrote the words for the anthem America the Beautiful and advocated for an egalitarian American, including social justice for immigrants. Jacqueline’s wide-ranging program will include vintage music of American immigrants from the British Isles, Western and Eastern Europe and Latin America, along with spirituals and other American religious and popular music. Be the Light!, inspired by poet Amanda Gorman’s quintessential words, “There is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it, if only we’re brave enough to be it,” celebrates hope, connection and acts of love and courage by Bates and others. Jacqueline will share stories about how historical tunes can speak to us today and create a ripple in the world.
