Porgy and Bess opened in New York City on October 10, 1935, running for only 124 performances before the production ended in financial ruin. The music and lyrics, however, have survived the seventy-eight years of controversy, assuming a stature unsurpassed in the American operatic repertoire. In short, Porgy and Bess contains some of the most recognizable and beloved music ever written.
