Garden Tip 111:

PREPARING YOUR WALKWAYS FOR SPRING

Spring is the perfect time to add stepping stones or narrow stone walkways to perennial gardens and flower beds to allow for easy access for summer maintenance. Step into your wide beds and borders now and decide on the best location to place the stones to serve as a summer workspace. Any perennials in the way can be transplanted easily and safely this time of year.

Stepping stones and walks do not necessarily have to be decorative for they will be hidden by the summer foliage of the garden.  I have a particularly large bed in the front yard where I added a small walkway large enough to accommodate a wheelbarrow which saves both time and energy in garden projects all year round.
