Garden Tip 165:
BLACKHAWKS GRASS

I visit a lot of gardens throughout the year to gain inspiration, ideas and to discover new plant varieties with which I am unfamiliar. One such plant that I discovered last year is Blackhawks Grass, Andropogon geradii ‘Blackhawks’, a big bluestem prairie grass.
This grass has quite a different look than most with which I am familiar. It grows in a dense clump up to five feet tall by two feet wide, making it a great architectural feature in the landscape. The most striking aspect about this plant is its color. Bright green in the spring, purple in summer, it is nearly black by fall.
Used as an accent plant, border or screen, this plant is drought tolerant and is disease and pest resistant. As John Cleese was famous for saying, “and now for something completely different.”
