The Dome at Highfield
The Dome at Highfield
June 15 – October 31, 2018
The Dome at Highfield is a collaborative project between The Dome at Woods Hole and Highfield Hall. In keeping with The Dome at Wood Hole’s mission to create a space and forum for interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative thinking and creative making, The Dome at Highfield will introduce the local and regional community to the sorts of programs The Dome at Woods Hole will offer at its future permanent home. Through exploratory educational programs, social events and communal gatherings, The Dome at Highfield will create opportunities for visitors to experience how the interaction of art, environment, design and technology will come together at The Dome at Woods Hole.
The Dome at Highfield is part of the Out of the Box! Art and Science Walk.
Monday, 5:30 – 7:00 pm, July 2nd – August 27th, Thinking Out Loud – a provocative series of discussions, conversations, lectures, performances and open mics – each week is a creative journey of discovery.
August 13, 2018 New plays. Presented by Boston playwright group, directed by Hortense Gerardo.
A special evening of short original plays will be presented by this creative group of writers in a staged reading format. Each of the plays has some connection to scientific issues, but each is unique in that exploration. Experience the creative process and provide feedback to the writers to help them with the development of their ideas.
August 20, 2018 Poetry and spoken word. Performance by Christine Ernst. Plus open mic!
The lead off presenter will be Christine Ernst, also know as Fat Ass Cancer Bitch, doing a short set of her original, often hilarious, and deeply personal material. Poets and writers are invited to share their work that evening for 5-10 minutes spots at the open mic. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the readings to learn more about the creative process of these writers.
August 27, 2018 Greg Watson presents “Spaceship Earth and Global Systems Literacy.”
Greg will start the conversation about our role in the health of the planet, Spaceship Earth as coined by Buckminster Fuller, encouraging participation from the audience with views of how we perceive and carry out that role. If everyone who attends walks away with one new idea they can implement in their own lives, the evening will have been a resounding success.
The Dome at Woods Hole is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of innovative exploration in the arts and sciences. Located in Buckminster Fuller’s oldest extant geodesic dome, The Dome will be a multi-disciplinary arts, performance and exhibition center bringing world-class contemporary arts to Woods Hole. The mission of The Dome is to build community around the intersection of art, science, technology and the environment.
Buckminster Fuller designed and built the geodesic dome in Woods Hole, Mass., in 1953. Originally constructed as a restaurant, the Dome has been abandoned since 2002 but has proven its architectural genius by standing the test of time since its creation. This iconic structure, which is eligible for listing on the National Register, is a testament to Fuller’s design, simple use of materials and philosophy to do more with less.
The initiative to rehabilitate and revitalize the Dome is underway by a team of dedicated community members and supporting organizations. Exemplifying Fuller’s passion for comprehensive anticipatory design, The Dome at Woods Hole will have exhibition/performance space, a permanent exhibit about Fuller, studios for artist residencies, hospitality amenities and supporting facilities.
R. Buckminster Fuller was renowned for his comprehensive perspective on the world’s problems. For more than five decades, he developed pioneering solutions that reflected his commitment to the potential of innovative design to create technology that does “more with less” and thereby improves human lives.
